Watched the third season finale last weekend. I won't spoil the episode but I do want to bitch about the companion situation. If you don't want to know Martha's fate, bail now.

Martha Jones is not renewed for Season Four. I can't help but feel she was unfairly treated. But first, Rose Tyler.

Rose is a pretty good Alice in Wonderland kind of foil. She's begins with nothing major going on in her life and no plans to change that. When a stranger offerers her adventure she's really got nothing to hold her back; other than Mum, of course. Her relationship with The Doctor never really goes beyond juvenile infatuation, which is charming in its own way. She maintains a sense of innocence and is very sympathetic.

Martha Jones, in contrast, has prospects. She's a med student and seems far more worldly than Rose. While Rose was an assertive force in the show, Martha has the potential to extended it even more. Unfortunately, with Martha's introduction, Rose seems to have been sainted.

Martha's inevitable infatuation becomes an over played unrequited love. She has a inferiority complex to Rose that's reinforced with almost every episode. We're always kept at arms length from her, as she is from The Doctor.

The result is negative chemistry by design. It's a device that should have been dismantled a few episodes in, but never was. Overall, it was an unpleasant excursion into how not to introduce a new character. Of course, it could be worse...

The last xmas episode, "The Runaway Bride" features a woman who's wedding day is sidetracked by strangeness. She's suitably miffed about this and reacts in glorious bridezilla style. Her character is meant to be abrasive, even if we should ultimately come to sympathize with her. At the end of the episode, The Doctor offerers her the stars and she declines.

I was relieved; while she softened, I still found her annoying. I audibly sighed relief. Alas, danger was not averted.

Turns out there's an LJ community, I Love Donna, about said character. Turns out ( yep, you guessed it by now ) that she'll be gracing the fourth season.

Color me underwhelmed.

I understand, and I am not one to seek out spoilers so this very well may be false, that Martha will be back some time in the 4th season.

She's also been declared as appearing in a least three episodes of next season's Torchwood. They'll be doing some heavy crossover story lines, I think. They've already said season four is it for the Doctor Who series, they might be trying to help Torchwood live on after.

We'll just have to wait and see how they really spin it.

They're saying four is it for Davies and his staff. I would be surprised if the BBC actually cancelled the show, though -- I think Davies is maybe underestimating the BBC's eagerness to continue making money off this newly discovered cash cow. We'll have to wait and see, I guess...

I'm not thrilled about Donna either. Bleh.
