Work didn't go as planned and Microsoft's Database seems to have corruption issues. But, that's a prior rant.

In the rant I used a new icon, featuring one of the most stolen images of the last couple decades, literally as well as figuratively, Munch's The Scream.

The icon is superimposed on another source of modern existential angst, a Window Logo. I ripped it off from this article on Vista woe. I meant to attribute the thing on first use, but I guess now it gets it's own entry.

I was also reminded of the need to cite sources by [livejournal.com profile] beckishadow who pointed to this great analysis of the work of Todd Goldman. I didn't know who this guy was, but I recognized a whole lot of his "inspiration".

I adore Lenore, kind of a more social Johnny the Homicidal Maniac. She's actually a fairly archetypal little goth girl, but they make a good case for the poached IP.

An odd stolen source, the computer program Neko. I had this on Windows 3.1 and enjoyed it's cute. The images appear to be public domain, I may make yet another silly icon. Kitty was a good size on those old 640x480 displays, but now it's 32x32 seems rather tiny.

I'd say there's a lot of difference between an actual parody image and what Goldman did (often times directly tracing others' images and then selling them as his own works - at insane prices).

Agreed. The point is simple attribution and basic honesty. If you are always clear about your sources you can't really go wrong.

If Todd credited his sources, the source could ask for licensing fees without there even being a question. Even if the material out of copyright, it would still be the right thing to do.

Of course, this type of behavior would basically eliminates those absurd asking prices. A few of the steps on the Buddhist Eightfold Path; right action, right livelihood, right effort. Deception and greed are not really going to get you to heaven, nirvana, or really anywhere special.
