I've mentioned before that I regularly click the "Random Blog" button.

I've found a few very interesting journals in a giant sea of crap. Sad thing is, in some blogs I can't tell if the content has anything to recommend it, because the page design appears to be a steaming pile of droppings from a blind dyslexic camel.

I've decided to make a list of ways to tell if your page layout was inspired by a tasteless Picasso. If this is you, please understand, this is not a critique of your thoughts or ideas. This is my humble request that you flush the blockage that has prevented others from experiencing the content you have to offer.

Ways to Tell your Blog has Design Issues

  • Text color and background color are such that the text is unreadable.

  • The column of content takes up less than 10% of the page.

  • Text color and background color are the same.

  • The text is small enough that people mistake it for a legal notice.

  • Text background is transparent and scrolls over a busy background image, rendering text unreadable.
