I have a work project with an insane deadline, so I want to work on it a little at home. I require Visual Studio 2005 (C#) and SQL Server 2005. None of that express stuff, but I'll use the SQL Server dev toy that comes with VS. However, I really want the SQL Server Enterprise Manager, so I'll have to dig up the enterprise disk, anyway. I want to be able to keep my homework setup away from the home machine, so I'll setup the homework box in VMWare.

I have a Windows XP Pro base machine in VMWare already, so that's done. Now to install VS. This is a bloody nightmare. It can't be done unattended, it needs a reboot. Then, half way through, it wants me to insert a disk I don't have or need. Turns out the thing won't install from a mounted ISO, but will install from a directory share of the ISO. I daemon tools the ISO and add it to the VMWare shares, it finally works.

SQL Server 2005 is a head case. It simply will not install the tools I want because I already have them, but I don't. Screw it, I have a SQL connection, I'll lump it. But wait!

On next reboot, my "hardware has significantly changed" and Windows XP wants to talk to the mother ship again. My personal copy of XP has been installed on several VMWare boxen and now the MS borg think I'm stealing it. Arrrgh!

This gives me a chance to install XP from scratch and use the work copy with the unlimited site license; hallelujah. More SQL Server fun, I figure I'll install the tools first and maybe bypass the bug. Turns out this software will only install from a DVD ( mounted ISO ) and fails strangely if installed via a share. Exactly the opposite of VS2005! Love that consistency.
