WTF! I've seen Sphere in the TV listings like three times this week. I've mentioned this movie before, it's profoundly bad in a way that only a movie with big actors, big script, big budget, and presumably a producer with a big brain tumor can be. Don't watch this movie, really.
The last two movies I've seen are so absolutely different that I'll have to mention them together. First was Memoirs of a Geisha. It's not something I'd really try to see, the few reviews I'd read were lukewarm, but the alternative was to see gay cowboys. I don't have anything against gay cowboys, but if I have to look at anyone naked on a giant screen, I'd prefer them to be female. Hot Asian chicks; no brainer.
Anyway, I enjoyed Geisha far more than I expected. It is a chick flick, no doubt. There are some very strong Cinderella themes running through it. It has about the pace of a made for BBC documentary. Still, it did a good job with tone and social upheaval without beating you to death with it. Oh, yeah, and there was Chairman Kaga; allez cuisine!
Movie two is something rather obscure and I can't really recall where I first heard of it. It's Immortel (ad vitam). First off, it's French, so I'm ready for subtitles. There were none, the French made a movie in English. Huh? Yeah, I know. There's heavy use of CGI, none of the backgrounds aren't virtual and it has the distinction of being the first movie to do that.
Immortel is based on a French comic done by an ex patriot Yugoslavian, Enki Bilal ( I love that name), who seemed to have complete control over the thing. I won't say it's great, but it's interesting. There is a small gore factor and some of the supporting characters are entire plasticine looking CGI, which can be annoying.
The two leads are fascinating to watch. Linda Hardy, our alien heroin with tidy bowl blood, was Miss France 1992. Thomas Kretschmann, an East German who often ends up playing a Nazi and was recently seen in King Kong (boat captain), has a really interesting accent and a kind of Rutger Hauer thing going on. There's also the god Horus... it's an odd flick.
