For all you lot who've already seen Serenity (geeks!), I have a question.

My quandary is this, I'll be going to the movie with someone who's seen very little of the show and wont have a chance to watch the DVDs in time. I get the impression that the movie tells pretty much the same story as the series. So, does it matter if they haven't seen much of the series? Is it doing them a favor telling them to watch the series first or might it be more fun, or just as enjoyable, going in cold?

Yes, I know it's a little late to ask this. The question popped into my brain after reading some of Neil Gaiman and Joss Whedon's interview in Time ( http://www.time.com/time/arts/article/0,8599,1109313-1,00.html ). Joss is cool, but Neil is my hero. I really, really wish Mirrormask was getting the same kind of release as Serenity (Sony bastards).

Joss wrote it so it would be an independent entity that someone could go into cold. Mike and I keep saying that we're curious to hear people's reactions who haven't seen the series. His sister will probably see it with us and she's only seen the first episode. I expect we'll get a lot of questions afterwards.

Anyway, it'll be interesting to see if other people think it's a kick-ass movie who aren't already swayed by the series.

It's a new story from those told in the series. Having seen the series will give you more background on the character and the world, but the movie should work well on it's own.

It's a different story, although it grows out of the events of the series. Your friend should be fine with the movie -- someone I know was just talking about how much he enjoyed the sneak preview, even though he'd only ever seen two episodes of the show and both were viewed while he was in a state of raging drunkenness after being fired. :)

I'd guess that your friend will probably have questions about some characters who don't get much screen time, but if you've seen the series you'll certainly be able to answer them.

Re: Mirrormask

When it gets close enough that it doesn't slaughter an entire weekend to see it, I guess. We're close enough to day trip Manhattan, but time wise it's a full bloody day.

Honestly, I was hoping that it might catch on and get a broader release. We hiked down to Princeton to see Garden State in our dinky little art theatre, two weeks later the thing was showing around the corner.

Re: Mirrormask

Hey, I don't suppose a 10/8 showing following Kingdom Crusades would work, would it? I'd be up for that...

Wed love to but we cant go to Crusades. I promised myself to Metalworker's a full year ago.

Ill travel wherever AmTrak takes me for MirrorMask, but baavgai has this silly job thing he seems to like.
