Some people tell me I don't blog enough, even though no one says boo to the posts... odd.
So, as I was drying my hair this morrow, Odin's day, I thought to myself, "Self, just leave the hair free for a bit, it'll dry ok." At which point the song "Born Free" crawled out of whatever hell hole my brain keeps it in and started to run on a loop in my head.
As I listened to the words and musical accompaniment, complete with a few grainy visuals from Disney TV, I considered how much more sane the world would be if we could take choice memories and simply un-remember them. Not only wouldn't I ever have to recall an advertisement again, but except for about a month total, my entire childhood would be gone. The shrink industry would have to find a new line of work.
Then, pesky brain, I began to recall a certain story. I've heard it retold a few ways. It goes something like this:
There was a time when everyone's wishes were granted, just for the asking. There was no want and people lived in complete harmony, their every need satisfied. People ultimately amused themselves by wishing creatively, making fabulous objects, trying to out do themselves at parties, that sort of thing. All were happy.
All, except Jack ( there were a lot fewer people then, everyone knew Jack ). Alas, Jack was a fool and no one had wished him otherwise, thinking he liked it that way. As a fool, the creativity of his wishes was wanting. Everyone just seemed to have better wishes than he could ever imagine.
Jack thought long and hard to come up with a really good wish. Jack would make a wish that would stop him from feeling bad. He didn't wish to be less foolish, or to be the best wisher in the world, nothing like that occurred to him.
No, Jack's solution to his problem what one that could only come from one such as he. Jack wished that there would be no more wishes.
My retelling could be better, but you get the gist. It's before seven in the morning, so I've kind of forgot my point.
Cool, my hair is dry.
