I have three basic fears at Pennsic; rain, bathrooms, and injury. All three are inevitable, of course, but if they can be kept to a minimum I'm happy.

Rain was mostly cooperative, it barked more than it bit. Otherwise, the weather was truly wonderful. Best you can expect for the time of year.

Bathrooms. Well, let's just say I normally pray for constipation. In camp, in a moment of weakness, I waxed poetic on the various urinal designs and the best for avoiding splash back. Kills a conversation dead. Don't do that.

If saying injury is inevitable sounds morbidly fatalistic, you don't know me. I'm too big, and too fat, and several days living outdoors with all that walking is kind of a death spiral. Pain is tolerable, new blisters on every toe, etc. However, other things I have no control over just start to crap out. It's annoying, really. Still, I did mostly alright.

I spent a whole lot of time at A&S, beyond the handful of classes I made. I'd planned six hours, but did some stand ins and computer stuff. I hate computer stuff at Pennsic; it's my time to unplug. Still, the class organization had issues. I volunteered to fix it. Also offered my services next year; more on that later. Maybe.

Aside from A&S, I volunteered for squat. I couldn't tell you what I did most of the time, but I never had any "what do I did now" moments. I had a bag full of projects, untouched. I had books, unopened.

I did some unexpected "work" at a feast. I carved a whole pig! I'm still quite pleased with myself, it was fun. I'm still amazed none of the fine cooks already there didn't want the honor. This is twice I've found myself looking at a dead critter I've never seen before, knife in hand, doing my best to look experienced and competent.

From what I hear, I did well enough. Someone even seemed to believe I'd read "The Book of Carving." Um, I guess it's on my list. I was told it took me an hour. I lost sense of time. I got to use a new knife, my big war purchase, for the job. I christen the knife Boar Breaker.

I think I'll have to read more on the subject period cuts. If everyone expects me to be somehow knowledgeable on the subject, it would suck to disappoint them. :p

Urinal designs. *sporfle!!!*

So, since I'm pretty sure you're plumbed like me...where did you use a urinal at Pennsic?? Personally, I prefer the "cover the seat with toilet paper and be comfortable" method.

Edit: D"OH! I thought you were Loosecanon!!!!! Your icon mislead me...

Still...Urinal designs. Love to hear that sometime...really. The elimination of waste technologies fascinate me.

Lol, I believe there is some standing tech for those sporting an innie rather than an outie. Haven't looked real deeply into it. Considering there's barely enough room to turn around in the things, probably still isn't practical.

Basically, the farther away the basin can jut from the wall, the safer for everyone involved. It doesn't really matter the aim, there's lower water pressure at the start and stop of the stream that means drippage.

The oldest ones have a scaled down version of what you'll find in the men's room and work the best. The sleeker, more compact designs that lay closer to the wall but are longer are functionally flawed. You need to stand over them and logically that's only possible if you're standing in the wall, or at least tightly pressed up against it.

Given such limitations, I'd normally sit rather than stand, but that was often not a viable options.

Um, yeah, sorry, you asked. :p

Carving

I'd be happy to lend you my copy of the Boke of Kervying-- especially if we can later press you into service as a Carver in feast halls...

Re: Carving

Thank you. There is a good chance we have a copy of it. Probably hiding under a cat...

I'm always happy to carve for feasts. I really do consider it one of the fun food jobs.
