Just noticed I haven't posted anything in nearly a month. "I'm not dead yet." I just get distracted by things that really aren't particularly interesting to anyone but me, mostly.
The current distraction is computers. Notably, a new Linux distro. After Ubuntu 8.04 came out last month I played with it both as an upgrade and a fresh install. The upgraded version, my main place, was slow compared to a clean version. All computer OSes have this problem, install, uninstall, and reinstall enough programs and they usually get a little schizo.
I also found out my new computer has crappier graphics than my old computer and no AGP slot to fix that. Since games are really the only reason to use Windows, I find myself with a partition to install something new on. Fist thought was a clean Ubuntu, but it's started to get a little gung ho in the one size fits all department, I thought I'd do the distro tour.
I also thought both Gnome and KDE are a little heavy and started doing the window manager tour as well. I don't need a lot, fast, stable, and minimal is fine. I've ultimately settled on Openbox, edging out some of the other *boxes because the config files are nice. Which led me to my current distro, Arch Linux.
Arch Linux is actively maintained, one of the fastest I've tried ( yes, I've used Slackware and Gentoo ), and reasonably unpretentious in it's approach. The setup assumes you know what you're doing and the base install is base. You must add all your toys, don't expect a flashy Gnometop or GDM to greet you.
So, um, setup of these things is a recreation in it's own right. Figuring all the settings, installing all the software, tweaking everything so behaves the way you want, finding new toys. Openbox had everything I wanted except a no frills dockbar and system tray. Just when I thought I'd run out of options, I found trayer and tint, with conky for my time as well as geeky stats. I wrote a lot of python code for menus and other toys I wanted.
Anyway, that's just one of the non-blogging distractions. I'll try to write something universally amusing, eventually, if I ever get this little status bar app written... :p
