Earlier this week, we found ourselves at the infamous Walmart. Yes, they're a bad, evil, megacorp. But, they employ locals and sometimes you just need something. While there, I visited the computer section on a quest. What was I looking for? An Eee killer and I didn't know if it was out yet.

I'm talking about the little sub notebook toy called a CloudBook. Manufactured by Everex, their site lists the thing as the front page. On that page you'll find the distribution point is walmart.com ( and some site I've never heard of). You'll also see it's release date is today.

People interested in such things have been buzzing for months. Our local WallyWorld put us "on the list" for one. We were assured they were expecting three. Of course, there is no list. Almost every employee says "huh?" when asked. The stock clerk at our local store never heard of the thing. Just try the website.

Ok... the web site has nothing. [livejournal.com profile] loosecanon, who is far more industrious than I, believed this would be perfect for a long hotel weekend and WANTED one. She harassed every store manager she could find for the last week. Went down last night to help them take stock. Called today. And, ultimately, got their website on the phone. (no mean feat, that.)

Yes, the website did have them; until 7:01AM, when they'd sold out. They only had ten to sell, anyway. That's right, 10 units. Period. W. T. F.

I suppose I thought it wouldn't be vaporware if Sam sold em. Then again, walmart seems to have a lot of questionably available computers. The $200 box, which sold so quickly they never even made it to most stores, still awol.

Updates (http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&taxonomyName=laptops&articleId=9059060&taxonomyId=66&intsrc=kc_top). Bastards.

Still irked, but glad I didn't get one. Submitted the situation to some geek boards. Public shame is probably the most satisfaction one can hope for.

Bother, I can't find it now, but I saw a blurb this morning that it's been held/recalled by the manufacturer to tweak it/fix some bugs.
