Nothing illegal. And not enough of anything to medicate a pachyderm. Just a box of decongestant pills for those days the world sticks an invisible vice on the tender parts of my skull. Sudafed works for this, consistently. I've mentioned this before.

Today, at the drug store, picking up a prescription, I spot the pills and say, "Oh, and a box of those." I knew, considering the weird legislation circling around them, that they were pharmaceutica non grata, but I was curious to see what that meant.

My request resulted in a ledger being dug up and my personal info requested. I saw a number on the list, maybe a driver's license or a social security number, I'm not sure. I declined to register my name on the list. I didn't get my Sudafed.

I understand that the powers that be feel this should be regulated. I can see their point. But there is a perfectly functional national system, part of the Controlled Substances Act of 1970, that regulates the distribution of drugs via prescriptions.

Why New Jersey, and other States, have chosen to implement quirky homegrown systems, instead of legislate the stuff under existent controlled substance law, is beyond me. Kudos to Oregon for doing just that.

"As of July 1, 2006 Oregon recognizes pseudoephedrine and all pseudoephendrine containing products as a Schedule III controlled substance, and requires a prescription to purchase them. *"
