Generic Asian groceries can be fun. We have many and there's always a chance to try something new. This can be a mixed blessing.

After dim sum this morning, which was real good, we're off to the market. The dim sum cart hadn't had the chicken curry puffs, so a need had to be filled. Sometimes, people ask me what I get in ethnic markets where English often isn't spoken. The sad answer is mostly amusement food, sometimes a dead hanging thing, and drinks that probably wouldn't pass FDA muster.

A piece of advise for Asian style markets; pastries are an adventure. Every culture has things it does well and not so well. Chinese bread, no so good. Pastries... to be clear, dairy products, milk, butter, are so new to some Asian cultures that some people can't even digest them. Now, make all your baked good sans cow and you have some idea of what you're in for.

There are exceptions, things that are a result of local influences. Pork buns and certain puff pastries can be good. It is for this reason we continue to experiment.

The peanut butter twist. There was no sugar, so it was kind of savory. It was dry and the peanut paste stuff was on the grainy, gritty side. I managed to masticate a second bite, just to assure myself it was that bad.

The "sausage roll" was a rather pleasant egg bread with extra sugar. It was, ahem, violated by a nondescript hot dog that was thrust through the length of the bun. This meat of questionable origin was not the best and the spicy tube steak tried to regurgitate itself a few hours later. I'm still sucking bile out of my nasal passages. Not recommended.
