The etymology of holiday is, obviously, holy day. Now usually taken to mean a day of celebration, observance, or simply freedom from normal work.
Most holidays are tainted with some holy day ideology. As good Americans we denature them, so we have an elf, a rabbit, a witch, some false idol to someone's faith. Even non religious holidays have some agenda, for lovers or soldiers or social reform. That's what makes today so very special.
Today is Thanksgiving. Or, Turkey Day, after the animal most often sacrificed for the occasion. T-Day is unique in its all encompassing nature. It is for everyone; no belief, nationality, or catastrophic event required. It focuses, unabashedly, on the roots of all proper celebration, feast.
Even a turkey isn't required. Everyone makes up their own feast rules, even if it's just a bucket of chicken and a case of beer, no one is left behind. I often think of all the people celebrating at once who don't usually join in my special days or I theirs. I hope that, for just a moment, poeple might even recognize their commonality and be happy.
Happy Turkey Day
Yes, yes, now you can bring out the friggin fat guy in the red suit... but not before the poultry perishes, damn it.
