As far as I know I'm the only one who does this; I could be wrong.
Unless you actually enjoy physical pain, chances are you avoid it at all costs. And yet, in defiance of all logic and instinct, we regularly schedule visits to the dentist.
Any time someone comes at you with a small shinny metal hook, even with the best of intentions, it's not going to be fun. While I brush regularly, I take no joy in flossing and thus suffer from plaque build up. ( scrape. scrape. ) The dentist has a simple fix for this. ( scrape. scrape. )
The solution will have you spitting blood and gore into a bowl under bright lights. ( scrape. scrape. ) There will be blinding pain. ( scrape. scrape. ) When an integrator shows up with truth serum and electrodes, you won't be surprised.
At some point, I made a conscious decision to treat these self inflicted tortures as an opportunity to practise meditation. Now, I know many meditative techniques and they all have their strengths. However, techniques for controlling pain are not something you generally practise, unless you really have to.
Controlling quick piercing pain is more of a challenge than the more common dull thud variety. It commands your attention, snaps you back to it, screams to be heard.
Today's adventure was uneventful. It didn't seem too painful. I'm not sure if I just got lucky or was better at staying centered as the blood flowed.
A few visits ago was a major crime scene, blood everywhere. After the mess was cleaned up, the hygienist asked me if I was alright; I hadn't moved. I asked if moving or thrashing would have helped. Well, no, but... that session must have hurt, right? Yes, it hurt like hell, I told her.
