San Diego has near perfect weather. I understand from the locals that it changes very little over the course of the year. This is obviously good, but how could it also be bad?

Well, San Diego also has more bums than I've ever seen in my life. By bum, I mean both homeless people and those who play homeless to beg more easily. Yes, I know, it's horribly gauche to make fun of those less fortunate than you. Well, suck it up, this is my blog.

The thing is, the bums of San Diego blend in. Unless they're actively talking to themselves, they pretty much look like the rest of the populous. They wear respectable clothes, often carry backpacks of the kind favoured by most city pedestrians. Bathe probably as often as some of the employed citizens.

On the way back to our room, I had a bathroom emergency. Happily, there was a friendly Border's Books on the way. I ran in, only to be confounded by lack of facilities on the first floor. I made it to the second floor. There, through the children's section in the back ( a paedophile playground that; brain-dead design ), I found the water closet. It was locked!

The sign told me I could cross my legs back downstairs to get a token, because they wanted to serve their customers better! I was not well server, I was nearly well soiled. Bum proofing? No doubt.

On East cost, bums don't have such an easy time of it. The weather varies dramatically over the course of a year. Bumsicles are a common tragedy. Our bums throw parts of decaying buildings at random tourists and are sometimes removed forcibly. They don't blend well, often sporting an odor and clothing that make their profession immediately apparent to everyone else. There seem to be far fewer bums here.

Curiously, San Diego seems to have very few dogs. There were a lot of yip dogs, this kind in vogue more as a fashion accessory than man's best friend. But no big ole German Shepperd's, Dobermans, Rottweilers, Pit bulls, etc. Large dogs didn't seemed to be kept as pets and I saw none of the packs of wild dogs that can be found in most Eastern urban centers.

This lead to a disturbing corollary; more wild dogs means less bums. Makes sense, no? Man's best friend, indeed.
